Water cisterns were a vital part of daily life in ancient Lycian cities like Fethiye. This surviving underground chamber offers a unique window into ingenious water storage methods over two millennia ago.
Carved into soft limestone bedrock circa 2nd century AD, the cistern served as the primary water reservoir for the Lycian citizens of ancient Telmessos. Its construction coincided with the city's peak prominence as a notable seafaring hub.
Covering an immense area of 1,100 square meters, the cistern could hold up to 1.5 million liters of life-sustaining fresh water. Intricate grooves and channels directed rainwater runoff from surrounding structures high above into its depths through small holes.
Visitors are treated to a magical atmosphere amidst its medieval-style arched pillars reaching up over 15 meters tall. Imagine weary inhabitants lowering ropes to gather precious water by flickering torchlight through the centuries.
